True North: Recognize Treaty 1 at Jets games
Hockey, like Lacrosse (Canada's official sports) are deeply rooted in Aboriginal culture. Its this game that has brought communities together for generations - both indigenous & newcomer. We should celebrate this connection of the game to our land and peoples.
Prior to, or immediately following the singing of the National Anthem, we should officially acknowledge at the beginning of each Winnipeg Jets home game that this wonderful sport and coming-together of people is being played on Treaty One Territory, as Mayor Bowman did at his inaugural City Council meeting.
I’d like to challenge Mark Chipman, True North, and the Winnipeg Jets to open this conversation with Manitoba's Aboriginal Peoples – it could go a long way for our community, and further our efforts of understanding and respect while at the same time paying tribute to the game we all love.
