University of Winnipeg - fostering inclusion
Located in downtown Winnipeg, in Treaty One Territory, in the heart of the Metis Nation, UWinnipeg recognizes that we are all Treaty people and believes education is key to combating racism. We are in the process of developing Canada’s first mandatory Indigenous requirement for all our students (pending Senate approval) to break down negative stereotypes.
We are committed to sharing our resources with our surrounding community. Many of our programs and supports remove barriers to university education. Examples:
1) Community inclusion: RecPlex, Model School, WiiChiiwaakanak Centre, Adventure Summer Camp http://uwinnipeg.ca/index/community-programs
2) Academic relevance: Indigenous studies, BA in Human Rights, Global College, Master in Development Practice (Indigenous Development), Urban and Inner City studies (located on Selkirk Avenue) http://www.uwinnipeg.ca/index/indigenous
3) Student supports: Opportunity Fund provides financial help to Indigenous and new immigrant students
