Overcoming bias/stereotypes
Hi all, this link is to an article that looks at the impact of "implicit bias" - in other words, the way stereotypes can seep into our minds and influence our actions/decisions, even when we believe in equality and don't see ourselves as racist. It is based on studies in other countries but has a lot of relevant ideas: http://www.vox.com/2014/12/26/7443979/racism-implicit-racial-bias
Some of the approaches they suggest that have shown promise for getting rid of implicit bias include counter-stereotypic training, exposure to individuals who defy stereotypes, intergroup contact, education efforts to raise awareness, taking the perspectives of others, and mindfulness-meditation techniques.
